27 November, 2023 19:35

A young girl was killed on the orders of a local jirga in Kohistan, after her edited photos and videos with local boys went viral on social media.

Some pictures and videos (apparently edited) of the two girls went viral on social media platforms,” said Masood Khan, deputy superintendent of police.

The incident happened in Sharyal in the Kolai Palas district. In response, a local jirga was held on the matter with the “consent of her family”. Which issued a decree for their killing.

“They shot dead one of them while police rescued the second one,” he said, referring to villagers. Some relatives of the dead woman were among the suspects, police said.

The second girl, he said, was rescued by the police due to expected threats to her life, but a senior civil judge sent her home with her father after she ruled out any danger to her life.

The boys in the photo has gone into hiding and his whereabouts are still unknown.

An FIR has been registered, on the complaint of the Kolai-Palas police station SHO Noor Mohammad Khan, as the victim’s family did not approach police to register a case. The local police said that all the culprits will be brought to justice.

Kohistan honour killings 2011

A video emerged in 2011 , when an edited video of local girls cheering and clapping for a dancing boy in 2011 went viral although they were never in the same shot together.

All five women in the video were killed, along with the boy’s four brothers, on the orders of a local jirga.

The Supreme Court chief justice Iftikhar Chaudhry took suo motu notice of the incident to no avail as Afzal Kohistani (elder brother of the three slain boys) who campaigned for over seven years to keep the case in the public eye until he was murdered in March 2019.
