UK Drivers to Get Digital Driving Licences Later This Year – Here’s What You Need to Know

It's not just the licence that will be digitalised; you can build a dashboard on the GOV.UK app that lets you access road tax, MOT and other services so drivers can have everything in one useful hub
Soon, forgetting your driving licence at home may no longer be a problem for millions of drivers in the UK. The government is set to launch digital driving licences later this year through a new GOV.UK Wallet and App, which will allow users to store and show their licence directly from their smartphone.
This digital update aims to make it easier for citizens to interact with government services and to contribute to the government’s £45 billion cost-saving plan.
What Is a Digital Driving Licence?
A digital driving licence is a free electronic version of your plastic licence. It will be stored on your smartphone through the official GOV.UK Wallet app, which will be available on both iOS and Android devices.
Much like digital railcards or digital bank cards, your digital licence will be easy to access, secure, and convenient. Users will also be able to view their driving history, renewals, and endorsements within the app.
The app will use built-in smartphone security such as facial recognition and two-factor authentication to protect your information.
When Is It Coming Out?
The GOV.UK Wallet is expected to launch this summer, starting with the release of a digital Veteran Card. The digital driving licence will follow later in 2025.
You will need to download the official GOV.UK Wallet app from the Apple App Store or Google Play, verify your identity, and upload required documents to access your licence.
Is It Compulsory?
No. The Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) has confirmed that digital licences are optional. Physical plastic licences will still be valid for those who prefer them.
What Are the Benefits?
Convenience: No need to carry your plastic licence.
Security: Features like facial ID and password protection.
All-in-One Access: Check MOT status, road tax, and driving history in one app.
Instant Updates: Get notifications about renewals or changes.
Lost Phone? You don’t lose the app or licence, just re-login.
What Are the Concerns?
While many are excited, there are a few concerns:
Older drivers and rural users might struggle with smartphone access or internet issues.
Security and privacy concerns about data being stored and monitored.
Battery reliance: If your phone dies, you can’t show your ID.
Digital divide: Similar to cashless parking or online-only banking services.
Do Drivers Know About It?
A recent survey showed that only 43% of motorists are aware of the coming change to digital documents. With 50 million drivers in the UK, more public awareness will be needed before the full rollout.
What Else Will Be Digital?
Following the digital Veteran Card and driving licence, the GOV.UK Wallet may also store:
DBS checks
MOT records
Road tax info
Other official government credentials by 2027
Final Thoughts
This is one of the biggest changes to driving licences since 1998, when the UK moved from paper to plastic photocards. Whether you welcome this digital shift or prefer the old-school ID, the good news is — you have a choice.
