British teenager Marcus Fakana, 18, has returned home to the UK after being freed from a Dubai jail. He was sentenced to one year in prison for being in a relationship with a 17-year-old girl. The case ended after Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the ruler of Dubai, granted him a royal pardon.
The non-profit group Detained in Dubai confirmed his release. Their CEO, Radha Stirling, said Marcus is now back in the UK and recovering.
The Incident
Marcus, from Tottenham, north London, had been visiting the United Arab Emirates with his parents in late August 2024. While on holiday, he began a relationship with another teenager from London, who was 17 at the time but has since turned 18.
After the trip, the girl’s mother reportedly found chats and photos and contacted Dubai police. Marcus was then arrested at his hotel by authorities.
Dubai’s Strict Law on Relationships
In Dubai, having a sexual relationship with someone under 18 is considered a serious offence. Even if both parties are close in age or from the same country, UAE law treats such actions as criminal offences.
The case drew wide attention in the UK. Many people were shocked by the harsh sentence and the criminalisation of tourists over what some say should have been handled differently.
Statement from Campaigners
Radha Stirling of Detained in Dubai said: “His case has attracted significant public attention due to concerns about the criminalisation of tourists and disproportionate sentencing. We believe this case highlights the urgent need for faster legal processes and better protections for foreign nationals in the UAE.”
UK Government Reaction
The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has been contacted for comment but has not made a public statement yet.
A Cautionary Tale for Tourists
Legal experts and rights groups say Marcus Fakana’s experience is a clear warning for tourists. People visiting Dubai are urged to understand local laws, especially about relationships, alcohol, and public behavior.
Campaigners are now calling on the UK government to do more to protect British tourists from falling into legal trouble abroad.
Current Status
Marcus is now in London, resting with his family. He has not spoken publicly, but his supporters say he is “relieved and thankful to be free.”
