Who is Zeynep Sonmez? Turkey’s Tennis Sensation Making Waves at the US Open 2025

Zeynep Sonmez has emerged as one of the brightest prospects in Turkish tennis, quickly gaining international recognition. The 23-year-old, currently ranked world No. 81 after reaching a career-high of No. 74 in July 2025, has already achieved historic milestones, including a breakthrough run at Wimbledon earlier this summer. Now, at the US Open 2025, Sonmez has advanced to the second round after defeating qualifier Katie Volynets and is set to face either Katie Boulter or 27th seed Marta Kostyuk.

Who Is Zeynep Sonmez?

Born on April 30, 2002, in Istanbul, Sonmez represents Turkey on the WTA Tour and is the country’s current No. 1 player. Her family traces its roots to the Arhavi district of Artvin. She is coached by Izo Zunic, with Mehmet Bayraktar guiding her fitness and mental preparation.

Sonmez’s professional rise began in 2023 with her WTA Tour debut. In 2024, she claimed her first WTA title at the Merida Open, defeating Ann Li in straight sets, while also capturing four ITF singles titles. Representing Turkey in the Billie Jean King Cup, she holds a 5-3 record.

This season has brought both challenges and triumphs. While struggling for consistency, she made history by becoming the first Turkish woman in the Open Era to reach the third round of a Grand Slam at Wimbledon. She also competed in the main draws of the Australian Open and Roland Garros and reached the Merida quarterfinals before falling to Emma Navarro.

With her ranking firmly inside the Top 100, Sonmez is not only a rising star but also a trailblazer for Turkish tennis, inspiring a new generation of players with her resilience and achievements.
