Who Took Over Ace Frehley’s Role in KISS? Unveiling Reasons Behind Guitarist's Exit
Ace Frehley, the renowned guitarist and vocalist of the legendary rock band Kiss, passed away on October 16, 2025, at the age of 74. His family confirmed the news through a statement shared on Instagram, revealing that the musician died at his home in Morristown, New Jersey.
The statement mentioned that Frehley was surrounded by his loved ones in his final moments. “In his last moments, we were fortunate enough to have been able to surround him with loving, caring, peaceful words, thoughts, prayers and intentions as he left this earth. We cherish all of his finest memories, his laughter, and celebrate his strengths and kindness that he bestowed upon others,” it read.
Earlier in October, Frehley had announced via Instagram that he was canceling his scheduled performances due to ongoing health issues. Reports suggested that in September, he suffered a fall in his studio, which led to hospitalization and doctors advising him to avoid traveling. The post detailing his condition has since been deleted.
While the official cause of death remains undisclosed, TMZ reported on Thursday that Frehley was placed on a ventilator following a brain bleed caused by the studio accident. His condition reportedly deteriorated before his death.
Ace Frehley’s Departure from Kiss: Circumstances and Reasons
A native of Morristown, New Jersey, Frehley achieved fame through his association with Kiss, though he parted ways with the band twice over the years. His first departure came in 1981, when, according to Variety, creative differences and struggles with substance abuse influenced his decision.
In a 2024 episode of the Talk Is Jericho podcast, Frehley recalled discussing his departure with bandmate Paul Stanley over lunch. “I had made up my mind after the success of my solo album that I was much more creative away from them than with them. So I really felt that I needed to go out on my own. It was a stupid decision when I look back now cause I lost millions of dollars,” he said.
Frehley also revealed that the band’s elaborate stage presentations became a personal challenge, particularly the use of silver-based makeup that triggered allergic reactions. He later confirmed in a 2015 appearance on the Today show that his struggles with substance abuse contributed significantly to his exit.
Although Frehley briefly rejoined Kiss, his final performance with the group took place in 2000. During an interview with rock journalist Gary Graff at the Oakland Press, he described creative tensions within the band: “They wanted to tour constantly and record constantly, over-merchandise the brand, and that made me crazy. I’m not a kid anymore. Touring constantly can be very exhausting. I don’t want to put myself in that position, so I’m happier with what I’m doing now.”
Following his departure, Frehley pursued a solo career marked by albums such as Anomaly, Space Invader, and Spaceman. He also appeared in several films, including Detroit Rock City and Remedy, solidifying his legacy as one of rock’s most influential guitarists.
