Maradona’s 2018 Prediction About the 2026 World Cup Is Going Viral — And He Was Right

01 July, 2026 14:23

An eight-year-old interview with Argentine football legend Diego Maradona has gone viral during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with fans across the globe drawing striking parallels between his warnings and the growing controversy surrounding mandatory hydration breaks during matches in the United States.

The Prediction That Resurfaced

Shortly after the United States, Canada, and Mexico were confirmed as the joint hosts of the 2026 World Cup back in 2018, Maradona — who passed away on November 25, 2020, at the age of 60 — appeared on an Argentine television programme and delivered a passionate critique of the North American sporting model. He feared that football’s traditional structure would be dismantled to serve television broadcasters and commercial interests. In his own words:

“They will divide the game into four halves instead of two to insert advertisements. Compare it, you will see.”

Maradona did not stop there. Deeply sceptical about awarding the tournament to the United States, he also questioned the country’s genuine connection to the sport:

“They have no passion for football. Canadians may be good skiers, and Americans wanted to divide the game into four 25 minute halves for advertising purposes.”

Why It’s Trending Now

While the game has not literally been divided into four quarters, Maradona’s words have struck a nerve in 2026 because of the frequency and timing of official cooling and hydration breaks being implemented across matches in the United States. FIFA introduced these mandatory stoppages citing extreme heat and player welfare concerns — and while that justification is medically sound in high-temperature conditions, the debate has intensified after hydration breaks were also observed in air-conditioned indoor stadiums and at venues with relatively moderate temperatures. That inconsistency has prompted fans and commentators to question whether player welfare is the only motivation, or whether the additional broadcast time these breaks create is also a contributing factor.

The Legacy Behind the Warning

Maradona was never a man who shied away from controversy. The 1986 World Cup winner — whose infamous “Hand of God” goal helped Argentina defeat England in the quarter-final of that tournament — had a career as colourful as it was brilliant. He was expelled from the 1994 World Cup after testing positive for performance-enhancing substances and faced repeated personal and legal battles throughout his life. Yet his football instincts and his deep love for the game were never in question, which is precisely why his fears about its commercialisation continue to resonate.

Whether fans agree with him or not, Maradona’s 2018 comments have firmly re-entered the conversation as hydration breaks remain one of the most debated topics of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
