Public corruption trial of former Israeli PM Netanyahu delayed third time

05 July, 2021 08:19

Public corruption trial of former Israeli PM Netanyahu delayed third time as the Occupied Jerusalem’s District Court on Monday ordered an additional week delay following two prior postponements.

The court has delayed it since June 16 and will now reconvene on July 19.

Earlier, it set the July 5 or 12 for restarting witness testimony of July 5.

Basically, the court’s decision means that the case will not really go back into full gear until October.

Because the court’s summer recess runs July 21-September 1.

Many of the September hearings will be cancelled due to the fall Jewish holidays, though there may be a few hearings.

Previously, the prosecution and the defense had spent April, May and June presenting the court with extensive evidence from cell phone of former Walla CEO Ilan Yeshua regarding Case 4000, the Bezeq-Walla Media Bribery Affair.

Moreover, the prosecution has alleged that Netanyahu used his powers to favor Bezeq in telecommunications policy in exchange for favorable media coverage from the Walla news site.

Co-defendant Shaul Elovitch owned the both companies.

However, as extensive as the previous evidence from Yeshua’s cell phone was about Case 4000, the prosecution had focused on text messages between Yeshua and Netanyahu messengers.

Or it focused on Shaul and Iris Elovitch and had not dug deeply into messages Yeshua sent to other politicians or third parties.

Upset Netanyahu

Defeat in PM’s election has upset Netanyahu. He had declared Naftali Bennet’s election a fraud.

That shows he follows his friend Donald Trump because Trump also said Joseph Biden stole the election.

But Netanyahu faces corruption charges, although, trial not goes smoothly so far.

According to critics, delay shows flaws in the justice system.

Besides,  it also shows him above the law. They think Netanyahu could create political crisis to escape accountability.
